About Us
We are a nonprofit organization, affiliated to the University of Brasília (UnB). We offer Portuguese lessons to immigrants and refugees. Our classes are free of charge. Since 2014, 2,000 students from 23 different countries have followed our program. We believe that through language, we can help open doors to those who need it most.
How it all began
ProAcolher was founded in 2013. It was the initiative of Lúcia Barbosa, a professor at the Center of Teaching and Research in Portuguese for Foreigners (Neppe) at UnB. It all started when an African refugee came to her because he wanted to learn the language. However, the courses offered until then were paid and most immigrants could not afford the fees. That is when Lúcia decided to create the project that today is entirely managed by volunteers who believe in and encourage the cause. ProAcolher works because of its volunteers. Over the past six years, almost 200 people have assisted somehow.
